Congo Ebola Containment Goals Set for Three-Month Resolution, WHO Reports Progress

BUNIA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization states that Congo’s Ebola outbreak remains controllable within a three-month period if adequate resources are provided to response teams. The latest official data indicates there have been 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities as of Aug. 16. The outbreak now affects 55 health zones across six provinces, with the case fatality ratio reaching 47.4%. This makes it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the nation’s history and the second-largest Ebola epidemic recorded worldwide.

According to WHO incident manager Thierno Baldé, achieving the three-month containment depends heavily on securing necessary response resources. The organization has obtained approximately $69.3 million of the $115 million needed, roughly 60%. Over the past two weeks, teams have added more than 400 treatment beds, deployed 100 extra epidemiologists, and mobilized over 500 community health workers for surveillance and contact tracing efforts. The response effort demands vehicles, ambulances, medical supplies, and personnel across an expanding affected region.

The virus transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, marking it as the sixth province impacted. As of Aug. 12, Ituri accounted for 85% of confirmed cases and 79% of reported deaths nationwide. Officials have noted that 70% to 80% of new cases have no known connection to existing patients. Efforts are underway to broaden surveillance measures to identify cases more rapidly and facilitate the transfer of patients into treatment centers. The first confirmed case in Bas-Uélé had traveled from Haut-Uélé before symptoms appeared on Aug. 4.

Expanded Response Efforts Cover Multiple Affected Regions

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare declared the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory tests conducted in Kinshasa confirmed the presence of Bundibugyo virus, a less common Ebola species first identified in western Uganda in 2007. This marks Congo’s 17th Ebola outbreak since the virus was initially discovered in 1976. Uganda has reported 20 confirmed cases and two deaths, with no new cases since June 21. These cases involved imported infections and secondary transmissions among contacts and healthcare workers.

Bundibugyo virus disease currently lacks a licensed vaccine or a specific approved treatment. Consequently, care primarily emphasizes early detection, supportive treatment, infection control, contact tracing, and safe burials. Officials are also intensifying community outreach efforts where individuals might seek help outside formal healthcare facilities. Response teams have trained local personnel and supplied hygiene materials to minimize exposure risks during patient transport and body handling. Early supportive care can significantly improve survival odds for those infected with Bundibugyo virus disease.

Funding Shortfall Persists Despite Expanded Surveillance

While contact monitoring has seen improvements, it remains below the targets set by public health authorities in several affected areas. On Aug. 12, teams tracked 17,460 of 20,740 contacts listed, achieving a national follow-up rate of 84.2%. To enhance detection and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment, health officials have deployed additional field epidemiologists. Community workers are also actively reporting suspected cases and facilitating patient access to treatment centers. By Aug. 9, 155 health worker infections and 45 related deaths had been recorded.

The WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17. Ongoing efforts by national authorities and international partners include surveillance, laboratory testing, clinical care, safe burials, and community engagement initiatives. Baldé emphasized that the three-month containment outlook is directly linked to securing the necessary resources. Since Aug. 9, there have been 640 additional confirmed cases and 367 confirmed deaths in the latest weekly report. The response continues amid ongoing insecurity and attacks targeting health services in eastern Congo.
