BANGKOK, THAILAND / RankWire.AI / – Since September 16, Thailand has experienced severe flooding resulting in 71 fatalities, according to the Interior Ministry. The disaster has impacted 51 provinces over this period, submerging large swathes of land. As of October 12, floodwaters persisted in 20 provinces and in Bangkok. The latest national assessment indicated that 908,595 households and 2,458,895 individuals were affected, underscoring the ongoing severity of the situation. The impact has been monitored through daily reports from provinces and disaster response updates nationwide.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported floodwaters covering 100 districts, 804 subdistricts, and 5,947 villages. Central Thailand continues to be among the regions hardest hit, with major rivers and their tributaries flooding communities and farmland. By October 12, water levels in many areas were either falling or stable, yet rising levels were still reported in parts of Phitsanulok and Phetchaburi, where authorities maintained vigilance and ongoing assistance to residents. Several low-lying communities connected to the central river systems still experienced flooding.

Prolonged flooding has been driven by persistent heavy rains and runoff from northern Thailand. Large volumes of water have flowed into central river basins, causing waterways to overflow. In early October, the floods affected more than 1.14 million households and 3.18 million people across the country. The figures reported on October 12 reflect a decrease in water levels in some areas, although flooding continues to disrupt homes, roads, farmland, and daily activities in multiple provinces. Emergency crews remain engaged in pumping water and assisting communities where drainage is slow.

Recovery efforts expand as floodwaters recede

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul ordered immediate start of rehabilitation work in areas where floodwaters had withdrawn. Authorities are focusing on repairing infrastructure, cleaning up communities, and reopening transportation routes. Cabinet ministers and senior officials have been tasked with overseeing operations in the most affected regions still under water. Emergency teams continue drainage efforts, deploying machinery, personnel, and relief supplies to communities facing high water levels. The recovery efforts aim to restore basic access and essential services as residents return to their neighborhoods.

In Bangkok, flood management has increasingly shifted towards recovery and restoring public utilities as conditions improve. Cleanup operations are ongoing, and thousands of flood assistance applications are being processed in the capital. On October 12, nine highway sections in five provinces remained closed due to floodwaters. Officials are still pumping water from low-lying areas and clearing debris in places where residents have started returning home and to businesses. Alternative routes remain open where floodwaters continue to block normal road access.

Relief payments accelerate across impacted communities

By October 12, government relief payments had reached 135,782 households, with total transfers exceeding 1.069 billion baht. Officials instructed local agencies to process remaining applications swiftly and expedite payments to eligible residents. Disaster response teams are also distributing supplies and coordinating recovery efforts across affected provinces. These efforts include deploying drainage equipment, supporting cleanup activities, and assisting communities where water levels have fallen enough for residents to begin restoring homes and infrastructure. Damage assessments are ongoing as more flood-affected areas become accessible.

Attention is increasingly shifting toward southern Thailand, where heavy rainfall persists. Forecasts for October 13 indicate heightened rain risks in Ranong and Yala. Authorities are preparing personnel, equipment, food supplies, and transportation plans for southern provinces potentially facing flooding. Emergency agencies remain on high alert while recovery activities continue elsewhere, with the government monitoring rainfall, river levels, and local flood conditions nationwide. Coordination with provincial authorities persists as regional conditions evolve.
