Ebola Crisis in DR Congo Hits 8,376 Confirmed Cases and Continues to Widen

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Democratic Republic of the Congo has confirmed a total of 8,376 Ebola cases and reported 4,042 fatalities, according to the latest data from the national health authorities. This outbreak has become the largest and most lethal Ebola epidemic ever documented in the country. By the end of September, cases had been reported in 63 health zones across seven of the nation’s 26 provinces. The escalating death toll has kept the outbreak at the forefront of regional public health initiatives.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak reaches 8,376 confirmed cases
Health authorities track Ebola transmission across several provinces in DR Congo.

The epidemic involves Bundibugyo virus disease, a strain of Ebola that has caused ongoing transmission since the emergency started in May. Congolese officials declared the outbreak on May 15 after cases emerged in the northeastern part of the country. This marks the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 17th recorded Ebola outbreak since the virus was first identified in 1976. Ituri remains a key transmission hub, with additional cases appearing in North Kivu and other regions.

Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, has issued a warning about the threat to neighboring nations. Persistent transmission and movement of populations across borders have kept regional health authorities alert, focusing on surveillance and preparedness. Uganda previously identified infections linked to the Congolese outbreak before ending its own outbreak in August. Authorities have also traced cases connected to travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Regional danger persists at high levels

The World Health Organization has classified the risk within the Democratic Republic of the Congo as very high, while also rating the threat to neighboring countries with shared land borders as high. The organization attributes this elevated risk to factors like population movement, unofficial border crossings, and ongoing transmission, which all heighten the likelihood of cross-border spread. WHO recommends enhancing surveillance, laboratory capacity, and cross-border coordination instead of implementing unnecessary restrictions on travel or trade.

The Congolese government, along with health partners, continues efforts such as surveillance, testing, contact tracing, patient care, and community engagement in affected areas. Measures to protect healthcare workers and improve access to communities with active transmission are also ongoing. Challenges posed by insecurity and population movement complicate operations, especially in parts of eastern Congo, where several affected health zones are located. Public health teams persist in tracking new infections while supporting treatment centers and local response initiatives.

    Global assistance supports ongoing efforts

On October 3, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Bunia in Ituri to reaffirm France’s backing for the Ebola response. France has allocated 13.4 million euros from January to July 2026 for Ebola-related initiatives, including humanitarian aid, research, and health programs. During his visit, Barrot toured an Ebola treatment center and held meetings with officials involved in the response. He also indicated that France intends to seek further humanitarian funding through upcoming budget discussions.

Currently, there is no specifically approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo Ebola, making case detection and infection control vital to the response. Health authorities and research partners are assessing potential medical countermeasures, while frontline teams continue isolating cases, tracing contacts, and providing supportive care. The current outbreak has surpassed previous Ebola epidemics recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Authorities continue to update case figures as surveillance and laboratory testing uncover additional infections.
