Tokyo, Japan / RankWire.AI / – Rescue teams operating across southwestern Japan continued their efforts to clear debris on Friday amid severe weather conditions after a powerful earthquake struck the island of Kyushu. Authorities confirmed that the death toll has increased to 34 as responders retrieved more victims from collapsed buildings and commercial structures. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.1—though the U.S. Geological Survey recorded it at magnitude 6.8—hit Kumamoto Prefecture Tuesday afternoon at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, causing widespread structural failures and significant ground movement.

Officials in Kumamoto Prefecture reported at least 86 injuries from the tremor, with six individuals in critical condition and under intensive medical treatment. Seismic data from the Japan Meteorological Agency registered the quake at the highest level 7 on the national seismic scale, marking the most intense earthquake in Japan since the Noto Peninsula event in early 2024. Damage assessments indicated ground displacement reaching up to 87 centimeters in heavily affected districts, rupturing water pipelines and fracturing main highways across the region.

Emergency coordination centers compiled casualty reports showing that nearly half of the fatalities occurred during major structural collapses at industrial and commercial sites. At a paper manufacturing plant operated by Nippon Paper Industries in Yatsushiro, eight workers lost their lives when a large concrete chimney collapsed into the main processing plant. Rescue teams pulled two survivors from the rubble as efforts to clear debris continued, while officials reported damage to the town hall in Yatsushiro despite recent seismic retrofitting efforts, including damage to its base isolation system.

Rescue Operations Continue as Debris Is Cleared Across Southwestern Municipalities

Secondary hazards caused by the initial quake resulted in substantial casualties at commercial sites throughout Kumamoto Prefecture. In Kashima, a retail complex managed by Aeon Co., six workers died after a gas explosion on the second floor caused part of the building to collapse. Emergency crews evacuated approximately 3,000 shoppers to nearby parking lots within half an hour of the tremor, but subsequent rescue operations involved heavy debris removal and gas line inspections to ensure safety in the commercial zone.

The earthquake also severely disrupted industrial operations and high-tech manufacturing across Kyushu. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company confirmed that its Kumamoto fabrication plant temporarily halted operations to perform safety checks and recalibrate equipment. Company officials indicated that several days would be needed for technical evaluations to assess the conditions of cleanrooms and confirm the structural soundness before production could resume on critical semiconductor lines.

Government agencies responded by deploying extensive personnel and resources to aid displaced residents and stabilize affected communities across the island. Japan’s Ministry of Defense sent approximately 4,900 Self-Defense Forces personnel to coordinate rescue operations, clear blocked roads, and distribute essential supplies. Military ships and aircraft delivered potable water, emergency food, and cooling equipment to over 400 temporary shelters housing 15,000 residents, amid summer temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius.

Utility companies in the region continue efforts to restore basic services as aftershocks persist in shaking southwestern Japan. Nearly 23,000 households remain without power, while 75,000 still lack municipal water access, according to local utility reports. Teams of civil engineers are inspecting damaged bridges, river embankments, and other critical infrastructure across Kumamoto Prefecture, as official reports confirm the death toll from Japan’s earthquake is rising, with recovery efforts continuing throughout the affected areas.
