The four-month emergency appeal is designed to aid 84,270 individuals affected by the disaster that occurred on August 26. This figure includes 19,284 households across 17 municipalities in six districts. Nearly 40% of those targeted are children. The focus of the response is on Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, and Tanahu. Nepalese authorities continue ongoing relief and recovery operations throughout the impacted regions.
The catastrophe was triggered by a glacial collapse, which caused a powerful surge of water, mud, and debris. Floodwaters rushed through communities along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system and neighboring areas. By September 6, more than 1,300 lives had been lost across Nepal, and nearly 5,000 people remained missing as search efforts persisted. Rescue teams have also investigated hydropower tunnels and settlements buried under mud. Survivors have been located days after the floods struck various locations.
Damage caused by the floods included destruction of roads, bridges, homes, schools, power grids, and local water infrastructure. Some mountain villages are still difficult to access because transport links have been severed or blocked. The emergency appeal supports Nepal’s government-led response to these conditions. Healthcare measures cover emergency treatment and nutritional aid. Protection services focus on supporting children separated from their families. The plan also includes food aid and assistance for surviving livestock. These actions address urgent needs across communities impacted by the Nepal floods.
Access remains a significant operational obstacle in northern Nepal. Damaged roads and bridges have hampered relief deliveries to upper Rasuwa, with some areas only reachable on foot. Recent humanitarian assessments identified 3,844 displaced individuals living across 34 sites in four regions. The same assessments highlighted 4,288 affected households, including 2,886 displaced households. These figures underscore the ongoing demand for shelter, water, food, and essential services as aid efforts intensify.
Relief supplies arrive in impacted districts
UNICEF received 84 metric tonnes of emergency supplies in Kathmandu on September 4 for distribution to the affected communities. The shipment contained water tanks, hygiene kits, and water treatment materials. It also included diarrhoea treatment equipment, tents, winter clothing, and learning materials. Trucks subsequently transported relief items toward Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. These deliveries aim to support safe water access, disease prevention, healthcare, and educational needs among children and families impacted by the floods.
The $49.6 million appeal covers ten humanitarian sectors through the end of 2026. Food security accounts for approximately $7.94 million of the total funding requirement. Needs related to water and sanitation total about $7.9 million, while health requires roughly $7.6 million. Logistics and emergency telecommunications need approximately $7.33 million. Shelter needs are estimated at around $7.1 million. Collectively, these five sectors comprise the majority of the appeal as Nepal continues to respond to one of its most devastating recent flood disasters.
