JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – Indonesia’s compulsory B50 biodiesel initiative is projected to save approximately 170 trillion rupiah, or US$10.8 billion, in foreign exchange in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. The forecast is based on reduced expenditure on imported diesel following the country’s increase in its national biodiesel mixture. The policy mandates that diesel fuel sold nationwide contain 50% biodiesel derived from palm oil. Officials noted that this regulation promotes increased domestic fuel consumption while decreasing the reliance on fossil diesel.

Indonesia B50 biodiesel to save US$10.8 billion in 2026
Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel mandate raises renewable fuel use and cuts diesel import needs.

Indonesia launched full-scale B50 implementation on July 1, with the official mandate being announced on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. This new blend supersedes B40, which comprised 40% biodiesel and was adopted as the national standard in 2025. B50 contains equal proportions of fatty acid methyl ester, known as FAME, and traditional diesel. The renewable component is supplied by palm oil, linking the fuel program to Indonesia’s local plantation and processing sectors.

The ministry compared the Rp170 trillion forecast with Rp133.3 trillion in foreign exchange savings projected under B40. It also anticipates that B50 will decrease fossil diesel consumption by approximately 4 million kilolitres. The government entrusted state-owned Pertamina with overseeing the blending process and supporting distribution throughout the national fuel network. Market participants may utilize remaining B40 stocks through September as the transition to the higher blend is completed.

B50 Mandate Boosts Domestic Palm Oil Utilization

Indonesia forecasts that B50 demand will require between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. The program is also expected to consume an estimated 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These figures surpass the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated under the B40 program for 2026. The increased mandate aims to channel more locally produced palm oil into transportation, industrial machinery, shipping, rail operations, and power generation sectors.

Official projections estimate the added value for the crude palm oil industry at 23.49 trillion rupiah. The government’s assessment also indicates that B50 could create around 2.1 million jobs across farming, processing, logistics, and fuel distribution. The ministry further estimates that the blend could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 44.46 million tonnes, surpassing the 39.66 million tonnes anticipated with B40.

Extensive Testing Supports the Nationwide Shift to Diesel with B50

Prior to the rollout, the government conducted testing of B50 across cars, trucks, mining machinery, agricultural equipment, trains, ships, and power stations. Automotive testing involved lighter vehicles covering over 50,000 kilometres and heavier vehicles exceeding 40,000 kilometres. Mining equipment was tested for around 1,000 operating hours, with no significant engine issues related to fuel quality observed. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel met government standards and the technical specifications of vehicle manufacturers.

Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel standards over nearly two decades. The program began with B2.5 in 2008, followed by B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, and B40 in 2025, culminating with the B50 implementation this year. Each upgrade has been accompanied by updates to fuel standards, production capacity, storage, transportation, and distribution infrastructure to ensure nationwide adoption.
