GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / RankWire.AI / – World Trade Organization will host its inaugural Trade and Tech Day on September 14 at its headquarters in Geneva. This event aims to bring together trade officials, policymakers in technology, business leaders, and other stakeholders. Under the theme, “AI and Trade: Turning Potential into Progress,” discussions will center on artificial intelligence and the impact on global commerce. The focus will be on advancing policies that broaden access to AI tools and promote more inclusive international trade.

WTO trade and tech day puts inclusive AI policy in focus
World Trade and Tech Day will put inclusive AI policy at the center of global trade talks.

Opening the event, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will deliver welcoming remarks. A ministerial dialogue will explore the reasons why artificial intelligence has become a key issue in trade policy. The program will include a keynote speech and a panel discussion with representatives from the private sector. Topics covered will include digital services, intellectual property, technical standards, and the participation of developing economies in AI-related value chains. These sessions aim to connect technology policy with the practical needs of cross-border commerce.

The meeting will use the World Trade Report 2025 as a principal resource. WTO modeling indicates that artificial intelligence could boost global trade by as much as 37% by 2040. It also projects that the world’s gross domestic product might grow by up to 13%. The extent of these benefits depends heavily on infrastructure, skills development, technology adoption, and supportive policies. The report highlights that unequal access may restrict participation, particularly among lower-income economies.

Trade policy assumes a central role

Multiple sessions will analyze how AI can reduce the costs associated with international trade. Participants will review various tools that assist companies in document processing, compliance management, and supply chain analysis. The agenda will also include discussions on digitally delivered services and the treatment of intellectual property rights. Additionally, a session will focus on how technical standards can enhance market compatibility. These topics reflect the increasing role of AI in customs procedures, logistics, finance, and other trade-related sectors.

The event will also consider obstacles hindering broader AI integration. Many enterprises still struggle with unreliable connectivity, limited computing capacity, a shortage of skilled personnel, and lack of affordable financing. Smaller firms often encounter additional legal and technical hurdles when venturing into digital markets. During a June discussion on AI and trade, WTO’s small-business group examined these challenges, reviewing how emerging tools can improve market research, lower costs, and improve access to trade information.

Introduction of practical AI applications features prominently

World Trade and Tech Day will include an exhibition showcasing artificial intelligence solutions designed for international commerce. A pitching session will feature tools aimed at companies, public agencies, and trade organizations. These demonstrations will bridge policy discussions with real-world applications of AI technology. Organizers intend to highlight how AI facilitates supply-chain analysis, regulatory processes, and access to market data. The format will provide attendees with concrete examples of systems already supporting trade activities.

Scheduled for September 14 at the World Trade Organization’s headquarters in Geneva, the event will blend ministerial panels, industry input, policy insights, and technology demonstrations. The agenda will revolve around artificial intelligence, trade costs, digital services, and economic participation. It will also scrutinize the infrastructure and skillsets necessary for wider AI adoption. Details about registration and online participation are available on the official event webpage.
