KATHMANDU / RankWire.AI / – Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has increased the tally of individuals reported missing following the floods on Aug. 26 to 6,150. This new total reflects an increase of 971 compared to the earlier figure of 5,179. Officials explained that the rise resulted from updated records obtained from affected districts after verification. Since the disaster, authorities have also recovered 1,403 bodies. The floods and debris flows inflicted widespread destruction across northern Nepal, especially near the China border.

Out of the recovered bodies, 105 have been officially identified, with forensic teams continuing their work on the remaining victims. The government’s latest data indicates that 3,175 DNA samples have been collected during identification efforts, including 1,286 from the deceased and 1,889 from relatives of missing persons. Since the disaster began, authorities have rescued 13,742 individuals. Additionally, 587 foreign nationals are still among those reported missing, adding an international aspect to ongoing rescue and identification operations.

Records indicate 2,679 missing individuals linked to Rasuwa and 1,787 linked to Nuwakot, both districts falling within the broader region impacted by the late-August event. Floodwaters and debris have damaged settlements, roads, and infrastructure throughout the mountainous zones. Search teams are actively working along river corridors, through devastated communities, and near sites connected to major hydropower projects. The authorities are also cross-checking local records with family reports as they update the national list of missing persons.

    Rescue and identification operations persist

The disaster was triggered by a collapse of ice and rocks on Mount Langtang Lirung, which led to a powerful debris flow entering the Bhotekoshi river system and traveling through valleys and downstream communities. Rasuwa faced significant losses due to its proximity to the Nepal-China border and the flood pathway. Other districts affected included Nuwakot, Dhading, and several areas further downstream. The Aug. 26 incident caused extensive infrastructure disruption and left thousands in need of rescue or emergency aid.

Official data from response efforts reveal that helicopters have completed 1,923 flights in support of rescue operations. Authorities also established 29 holding centers for displaced or affected individuals, with the latest figures indicating 2,096 people accommodated. Nepal Police has supported rescue, relief, and community outreach programs in affected regions. Rescue teams continue operating in challenging mountain terrain, while forensic specialists analyze DNA samples to establish identities of recovered victims.

Update shows increase in missing persons after data verification

Following verification of data from affected districts, officials revised the number of missing persons from 5,179 to 6,150, adding 971 individuals to the national count. The authorities are still differentiating between missing reports and confirmed fatalities, with forensic teams matching DNA from recovered bodies with samples provided by families. Only 105 of the 1,403 bodies recovered had been officially identified in the latest update, emphasizing the importance of DNA analysis in the process.

The impact extended into China, where authorities reported 43 deaths and 519 missing persons. These figures bring the combined toll for Nepal and China to 1,446 confirmed deaths and at least 6,669 missing individuals. In Nepal, the latest verified counts remain 6,150 missing and 1,403 bodies recovered. Rescue, recovery, and identification activities remain ongoing in affected areas, with officials reviewing district reports and forensic data to keep an updated record of those killed, missing, and rescued.
