MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN / RankWire.AI / – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in the United States participating in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting along with bilateral trade negotiations. The event takes place in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1. According to India’s Commerce Ministry, Goyal is also scheduled to meet his U.S. counterpart during this trip. The talks aim to address the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement and make progress toward finalizing an interim trade deal based on the joint framework established in February 2026.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is hosting the G20 event, which gathers trade ministers from the member economies. The official agenda includes discussions on forced labour in global supply chains and structural excess production capacity. Participants will also examine the Most-Favoured-Nation principle and trade restrictions related to food. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has arranged ministerial sessions across both days, complemented by meetings and industry events held in Milwaukee.
India expressed its intention to promote an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system centered around the World Trade Organization during the meeting. The government emphasized the importance of allowing policy flexibility for developing economies. Goyal is expected to hold bilateral talks with other participating ministers on the sidelines, focusing on opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, and other trade-related enterprises domestically and internationally.
Trade agreement negotiations regain momentum
The India-U.S. trade negotiations build upon a joint framework announced in February, which aims for an interim agreement fostering reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. This framework also reaffirmed negotiations toward a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement and outlined commitments on tariffs and market access for industrial goods and various agricultural products. Additional areas of focus include medical devices, information and communications technology, standards, and supply-chain cooperation. Both governments continue efforts to finalize the interim agreement within the scope of broader bilateral negotiations.
Goyal’s U.S. visit extends from September 29 to October 5, including engagements beyond the G20 conference. He plans meetings with business leaders and investors in Milwaukee and Chicago, representing sectors such as manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail, and technology. The schedule also involves roundtables with startups and other companies. While in Chicago, the minister will meet with professional associations representing the Indian community and participate in scheduled commemorative events during his stay.
Supply chain issues and capacity highlighted at G20
The Milwaukee program features a Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity on September 30, alongside a ministerial session. G20 ministers are also scheduled to tour a Rockwell Automation facility before the official opening later that day. Additional ministerial meetings are planned for October 1. The United States holds the G20 presidency in 2026, and U.S. officials have prioritized discussions on forced labour, excess capacity, food trade, and the Most-Favoured-Nation principle at the summit.
India and the United States initiated negotiations toward a broader bilateral trade agreement in February 2025. The February 2026 framework maintained these talks while establishing the foundation for an interim arrangement. Goyal’s activities in Milwaukee are part of this ongoing process. His meetings with U.S. officials aim to advance the bilateral agreement and complete the interim deal outlined in the joint framework. The G20 program continues through October 1, with Goyal’s broader U.S. visit extending through October 5.
