SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – In August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves experienced their most significant monthly expansion on record. According to the Bank of Korea, the total reserves reached $442.28 billion by month’s end, marking an increase of $14.33 billion from $427.95 billion at the conclusion of July. This surge represented the largest monthly increase since the reserve data series started in 1971 and also marked the highest level since May 2022.

South Korea reserves climb record $14.33 billion in August
South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves reached $442.28 billion at the end of August.

The August rise continued a three-month recovery trend for South Korea’s foreign reserves. Reserves grew by $370 million in June and by $590 million in July, but the August increase far exceeded these figures. It also surpassed the previous record monthly rise of $14.29 billion set in May 2009. Despite this substantial jump, reserves are still below the record high of $469.21 billion recorded in October 2021.

The central bank attributed the growth to several quantifiable factors during August. Financial institutions increased their foreign currency deposits, and returns from managing reserve assets contributed to the total. Currency fluctuations also affected the dollar value of assets denominated in other currencies. Since the Bank of Korea reports the country’s reserve holdings in U.S. dollars, changes in exchange rates can modify their reported value without altering the actual amount of foreign assets held.

Foreign securities continue to be the main component of reserves

At the end of August, foreign securities comprised most of South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves. Their value increased by $7.07 billion from July to reach $387.07 billion, accounting for 87.5% of the total reserve holdings. This category includes government and corporate securities held as reserve assets. Foreign currency deposits also saw a significant rise, climbing by $7.17 billion in August to end the month at $30.30 billion.

Special drawing rights increased by $60 million to $15.77 billion during the same period. South Korea’s reserve position stood at approximately $4.34 billion, while gold holdings remained steady at $4.79 billion. The data indicates that securities still dominate the reserve composition, despite the notable growth in deposits. The combined increase in securities and foreign currency deposits accounted for nearly the entire $14.33 billion monthly growth in the country’s official foreign reserves.

Reserves reach four-year peak after August boost

The $442.28 billion reserve level marks the highest since May 2022, when reserves stood at $447.71 billion, surpassing levels recorded after the October 2021 peak. This latest figure also signals a return closer to pre-decline levels. South Korea’s official foreign reserves include securities, deposits, gold, special drawing rights, and the country’s reserve position within the international monetary system.

Foreign exchange reserves serve as official assets that support international payments and meet external financial commitments. The country reports these figures monthly, providing the markets with a regular gauge of its reserve status. August’s record monthly increase and the highest total since May 2022 mark a significant departure from the smaller reserve gains observed in June and July, although the total remains below South Korea’s all-time peak.
