SUMMERLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA / RankWire.AI / – Over 20,000 individuals have evacuated communities surrounding Okanagan Lake following the rapid progression of the Bald Range wildfire that swept through southern British Columbia over the weekend. The provincial government declared a state of emergency on Saturday as flames neared Summerland and areas near Peachland. By Saturday night, the fire had grown beyond 10,300 hectares, destroying homes and damaging other properties along its path. Emergency responders utilized helicopters to reach dozens of residents isolated by the blaze. Multiple communities and rural zones continued to be under evacuation orders on Sunday.

The fire was first reported Friday evening and expanded rapidly as wind conditions intensified across the South Okanagan. Within hours, it moved toward densely populated regions west of Okanagan Lake. Summerland, a town with a population of approximately 12,000, was forced to evacuate entirely. Authorities also ordered thousands of residents in and around Peachland to evacuate. The evacuation zones included Faulder, segments of the Okanagan-Similkameen and Central Okanagan regional districts, and lands belonging to the Penticton Indian Band. Additionally, thousands more homes were placed under evacuation alerts.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, persistent hot and dry weather conditions continued to facilitate the fire’s spread across southern British Columbia. Heavy smoke and poor visibility hindered both ground and aerial firefighting efforts. A total of ten helicopters, including one equipped with night-vision, participated in the response. Limited by turbulence and thick smoke, some aircraft operations were restricted. Fire crews concentrated on establishing containment lines and protecting structures around Summerland as the fire displayed minimal new growth on Sunday. Hundreds of provincial firefighters, supported by teams from Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, worked tirelessly across the region.

    Evacuations Extend Throughout Okanagan Area

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed a fatality related to the wildfire on Sunday. They reported that an 80-year-old resident of Meadow Valley died suddenly while evacuating her home with a family member. The woman had been leaving due to the Bald Range fire, and her death is now under investigation by the BC Coroners Service. At the time, police stated no other fatalities had been reported. Emergency crews also rerouted firefighting helicopters to rescue over 50 individuals trapped or isolated as the fire moved through the area.

The emergency declaration in British Columbia grants authorities the authority to impose travel restrictions, provide accommodation support, and execute other response measures. Officials emphasized the significant damage inflicted on homes and properties. Highway 97 closures impacted travel between communities along Okanagan Lake, and residents were advised against using forest service roads. Emergency support centers opened in Penticton and West Kelowna to assist displaced residents. Local governments advised evacuees to register for short-term assistance and stay updated through official channels. Damage assessments are ongoing in areas accessible to crews for safe inspection.

Federal Support Provides Assistance to Displaced Persons

The federal government approved British Columbia’s request for aid as the evacuation crisis intensified. This aid includes shelter and lodging options for those who left their homes. Public Safety Canada’s Government Operations Centre has begun collaborating with provincial officials to coordinate the response efforts. The province indicated that it had sufficient housing resources to meet immediate needs over the weekend. Authorities recommended evacuees who could stay with family or friends to do so, while emergency teams continued efforts to find temporary accommodations for those requiring them.

The Bald Range wildfire remains the primary concern in the South Okanagan as crews monitor evolving conditions. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and more than 100 wildfires burned across British Columbia during the weekend, many classified as out of control. International firefighting teams had been deployed prior to the expansion of the Bald Range fire. Officials persist in urging residents under evacuation orders to leave immediately, while those under alerts are advised to prepare for swift evacuation should conditions worsen.
