WHO Reports 80% of New Ebola Cases in Congo with Unknown Transmission Links

BUNIA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization announced that 80% of recent Ebola cases in eastern Congo originate from unidentified transmission chains. These individuals did not appear on contact lists linked to previously confirmed infections. Health teams only became aware of many cases after symptoms, testing, or fatalities triggered new alerts. WHO emphasized that this surveillance gap remains one of the most critical challenges in controlling the outbreak. The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, a rare strain of the disease.

WHO says 80% of new Congo Ebola cases lack known links
WHO says most new Congo Ebola cases remain outside known transmission chains.

Congolese health officials reported a total of 2,011 confirmed cases and 754 deaths as of July 13. The latest daily update recorded 54 new cases and 28 fatalities. Authorities currently isolate 753 patients, while 366 have recovered. Response teams are monitoring 67.4% of identified contacts in Ituri, North Kivu, and Haut-Uele. Typically, contact monitoring continues for 21 days following the last known exposure.

Contact tracing is essential for health workers to observe exposed individuals and facilitate swift testing when symptoms appear. WHO noted that 92.3% of the 430 investigated deaths through July 5 occurred either in communities or prior to hospital admission. This highlights delays in detection, referral, isolation, and access to healthcare. Ebola transmits through direct contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. It can also spread via contaminated objects or contact with someone who has died from the disease.

Outbreak Extends to Five Provinces in Congo

Ituri remains the epicenter, with 1,808 confirmed cases and 631 deaths. The province has reported infections across 26 of its 36 health zones. North Kivu has documented 182 cases and 106 deaths across 11 zones. South Kivu reported three cases and one death. Haut-Uele had 14 cases and 13 deaths, while Tshopo recorded four cases and three deaths. In total, 45 out of 140 health zones in these five provinces have reported infections.

In Uganda, 20 confirmed cases and two deaths had been reported by July 14, with 17 recoveries. The country’s latest confirmed case occurred on June 21. Of these cases, 15 had links to travel from Congo, and five involved local transmission. No documented community spread has been identified in Uganda. Authorities also tracked imported cases among travelers and aid workers leaving affected areas in Congo, leading to isolation, specialized treatment, and contact tracking in destination countries.

Enhanced Diagnostic and Therapeutic Development Efforts

Bundibugyo virus currently lacks an approved vaccine or specific treatment. Patient care emphasizes rapid diagnosis, isolation, fluids, oxygen, electrolyte replenishment, and other supportive measures. WHO approved the first molecular diagnostic test for the virus on its Emergency Use Listing on July 2. This test detects viral genetic material in blood samples. Laboratory capacity has expanded to 10 sites across the affected regions, with testing capabilities exceeding 2,000 tests per day. Researchers also launched the PARTNERS trial to assess remdesivir and the monoclonal antibody MBP134.

Coordination efforts among Congolese authorities, WHO, and Africa CDC include surveillance, laboratory testing, clinical management, safe burials, contact tracing, and community outreach. Challenges persist due to insecurity, displacement, and movement along mining and trade routes, which hinder access to some communities and healthcare facilities. WHO reported receiving roughly 40% of a $115 million funding appeal aimed at the response. Officials continue to focus on early detection and swift isolation, as most new cases are outside known transmission chains.
